The Surrealist movement was a key inspiration for designer Kate Sylvester, who took cues from work by Meret Oppenheim to Salvador Dali. The Stephen Marr team created a suitably intellectual take on a soft, wispy up-do for women. Men wore their locks in a loose natural curl, topped with a bowler hat. The look was thoughtful, academic and self-assured.

DEADLY PONIES

Sleek robotic androids were inserted in a dark and dingy set for the accessory label Deadly Ponies installation. The lo-fi aesthetic of the label’s jewellery and leather bags contrasted with the slick, synthetic styling.

THE HOT SET

Jaeha

With a range inspired by cult film Edward Scissorhands, Jaeha’s models took their cues from the theatre. The creative team gave models a dramatic ‘before the show’ look, as if preparing in the green room before their big debut – think Marcel Marceau and old-school French cinema to accompany Jaeha’s signature strong, contemporary structures and bold graphics.

Chelsea Thorpe

Romantic but wild, Chelsea Thorpe is a bundle of contradiction. Juxtaposing soft, flat waves with wild ends, the result is one of a Lady Chatterley type character, the perfect accompaniment to the collection, which is pretty, light and feminine - although the beauty has dark and hidden depths.

Salasai

Is it a girl or a boy? The extremely androgynous look for the Salasai show was laced with brutalism – a hard fringe ran from ear to ear in a heavy dome style bowl cut. The collection, Domestic Maid in Waiting combined nonchalant shapes with a hard-edged sensibility. Elements of rockabilly emerged in an ever-so-contemporary sort of supermarket array of utilitarian yet sexy workwear styled streetwear, inspired by the uniforms of women at work in day-to-day jobs.

The look was fresh from battle when longstanding fashion house Nom.d presented a collection that drew from their 21-year-strong archives. A epic, androgynous look was required, which meant messy, side-parted ponytails with a heroic Joan of Arc feel – styling equally suitable for catwalk or battlefield.

JULIETTE HOGAN

Juliette Hogan’s signature look is always ever so ladylike and elegant, with soft fabrics and strong simple prints the hallmark of her work. To suit, the Stephen Marr creative team created fingerwaves through the top, graduating into a loose curl. For a soft, feminine look without delving into something too “pretty pretty”, a more serrated curl was created – steering away from the traditional rounded style. Wella High Hair spray gave hair a soft salty feel to hold the wave and was also used as a finishing tool.

LOVES LIES BLEEDING

Tangled, textured tresses resulted in a naïve gothic type look to accompay Love Lies Bleeding’s up to the minute street wear. The collection was saturated with mid-90s references the designers dubbed “the public school aesthetic”. Think tie-dye and stonewash denim - it’s a little bit slutty, a little bit Madonna, a little bit NWA – with hair to suit a teenage dream.

HAILWOOD

Big, curvy hair gave Hailwood’s long-haired models a sex kitten Brigitte Bardot look. Heavy, textured sixties-style bobs with strong fringes had a slight kick. Using Wella SP Ultimatum spray, Sebastian Evokativ Disobedient and Sebastian Evokativ Crafty to achieve the voluptuous style, sixties references abounded in both hair and clothes. Hailwood’s collection was based on the Beatles infamous Help album cover and a Rudolph Steiner designed 1920s dance troupe costume – fluid lines made in organic cottons.

CYBELE

New wave met cosmic rockabilly at Cybele. Models walked the runway with sleek, polished dos reminiscent of a 1980s style flat top. Cybele’s collection, based on the epic astronomical event that is the eclipse, included strong elements of circular form and a moody winter palette accented with vivid orange and yellow. Wella sp ultimatum spray was pivotal in creating the fresh faced rebel look.

Deborah Sweeney

The week opens with Deborah Sweeney’s seventies-styled rock chicks. An old-school sci-fi silhouette meant hair sat flat to the head in a severe side part, descending into loose, chalky ends. Sensual Slip by Sebastian and Wella Sp Ultimation were integral to achieving the look. The colour palette was cool and neutral, perfectly complimenting the clothes. Sweeney’s Winter 2008 collection is the ultimate encapsulation of grungy rock’n’roll styling – think all in one waistcoat dresses and transparent ponchos with primary-bright zippers – effortless cool with a slightly dishevelled sexiness.

Good morning and welcome. ANZFW has kicked off and behind the scenes is organised chaos. Models, stylists, makeup artists, photographers and PR people are madly dashing about, but the Wella Stephen Marr Cell is an oasis of cool calm. The fitout, courtesy of art collective Gambia Castle is retro-fashion heaven and the Lovejuice is chilling. Fashion photographer Sam Crawford is hard at work snapping backstage action and Special Problems is keeping everything under control. The first show of the week, Deborah Sweeney, is ready to hit the catwalk. We’ll keep you posted.
